Clear answers when an agency needs to know.
Confidential psychological fitness-for-duty and return-to-duty evaluations for law enforcement and public safety personnel, with findings an agency can act on.
When agencies request one
A fitness-for-duty evaluation is appropriate when there is an objective, job-related concern about whether an employee can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the position. Agencies also use them to support a return to duty after leave or a critical incident.
What the evaluation includes
Fitness-for-duty evaluations are conducted consistent with the IACP Police Psychological Services Section guidelines for psychological fitness-for-duty evaluations.
- Review of the referral question and the records the agency provides
- Psychological testing selected for the specific concern
- An in-depth clinical interview with the employee
- Collateral information when appropriate and authorized
- A written report that answers the referral question directly, with recommendations when appropriate
Confidentiality and scope
The report is limited to what the agency needs to know about fitness for duty. It does not include unnecessary personal or clinical detail. Employees are told at the start who the client is, what the report will cover, and who will receive it.
